Project Proposal

Diploma in Performing & Production Arts Unit 8 Project Proposal Section 1: Review So far in my course I feel have become a better actor and are now more confident than I was in my abilities as an actor. I've worked on Chekhov and his idea of Psychological Gesture when I had to switch between my 2 characters in 'The Three Sisters' meaning that I had to instantly get into role. I have used actions in both of my productions and worked more on units of action which worked very well in our production of 'The York Realist'.  I have also worked with the Donmar Warehouse, a theatre company in the industry and have learnt carious skills such as physical theatre and acting tactics to draw the focus to myself when needed. Physical theatre is helpful to me as it will allow me convey emotion and meaning in movement not just in the lines I am saying. The acting tactics will help me to draw the attention of the audience when I want to...

Where Am I After this course I have not yet decided where I would like to progress to, the ideal option would be the 2 nd year of the Level 3 course as I feel it is the place where I would be most comfortable. I also feel like continuing on with the course will allow me to improve on myself to become a better actor for my potential career further down the line. Then to further progress I would like to move on to RADA to improve on my acting and my chances of becoming an actor, as I feel the connection that they have will be very useful me. What skills do I posses I posses a variety of different skills. These include: Team Work Ability Group Managing Skills Able to read between the lines (To uncover subtext and hidden meaning.) Commitment Motivation Working Independently. Characterisation   My understanding of given circumstance helped me to do the best I could in my performance of The Three Sisters and the York Realist, mainly using t...

The York Realist

Image
The York Realist We began looking at an exert from Peter Gills 'The York Realist', which was: "I live here, I live here, you can't see that, though. You can't see it, this is where I live. Here' This created some interesting ideas about what this passage meant but also what kind of themes we could expect from the play, my first impression was that it was about someone defending their home from someone they see as an intruder. I got this due to the repetition of "I live here" and how they direct it towards whoever they are speaking to, for example they say "You can't see" which is directly spoken towards them. (The York Realist performed by the Donmar Warehouse.) After this we had to create a short scene based on our ideas around this exert. My partner and I decided to go with a homeless person staying in a hunting cabin which they thought was deserted. The owner then comes home and sees the intruder in their living r...

The Three Sisters

The Three Sisters The script that we have been given has been adapted and translated for modern use by Benedict Andrews. We began looking at the play 'The Three Sisters' by Anton Chekhov. We sat in a group and read through the first couple pages of the script and were given characters to speak as so we could get a feeling of the characters right from the beginning. This is useful as it allows us to adapt to the new roles as soon as possible. Our teacher then began explaining the events of the story and the main characters. The three sisters, Olga being the eldest at 28, Masha the middle sister at 23 and the youngest Irina at 20. As a class we spoke about what we thought were some of the main themes in the play, we decided them to be: Family Conflict Relationships Politics Dissatisfaction  Class After this we the read the first scene a couple of times and discussed the potential blocking that may occur in the scene. We decided the best way to see how it will wor...

Practitioners Project

If I was going to design the York Realist I would set it in London in the 60's as there was a lot of controversy towards gay people in that time, this would be good as it would show the comparison to it being in York where there were fewer gay people. This contrast is strong as there would've been more attempt to hide the fact that George and John were gay, for example they would use Polari more often than speaking normal English to hide their homosexuality.  Instead of making George a farmer I would make him a police officer which would further show the conflict of being a gay police officer. I would still keep John's role as a theatre director as it would work well with him being in London as the main set. I would still keep Doreen but this time she is already with George which further explores how far he has gone to keep his sexuality a secret.   As far as lighting and sound I would still use different levels of light to show a change in time and music to cre...

Rehearsal Time September - December (First Term)

We completed the setting up of our blogs and looked at the different ways we could structure it or lay it out. After this we discussed our own knowledge of the plot to Romeo and Juliet in as much detail as we possibly could. Leading on from this we were then split up into groups of 4 to create what we thought as a group were the most important scenes, my group decided this to be where Romeo first meets Juliet, their marriage and when Juliet finds Romeo dead of poison. Today we learnt some improvisation techniques which helped us as a group to focus and to think of things on the spot to keep acting scenes moving fluidly. This is a useful technique as it allows us to adapt if anything goes wrong during the performance and make it seem as if nothing has gone wrong until it is able to get back to what it should be. We began the lesson with a vocal warm up to relax our vocal muscles and to improve not only our pronunciation of certain words, but the articulation of diff...
